The US government has announced the imposition of new tariffs on products from the EU, China, Japan, India, and other countries.

Basic tariff of 10% for all imported products

The United States has established a universal tariff of 10% applicable as of April 5 for all products imported into its territory, without exception by sector or category, and other higher ones implemented as of April 9.

Some countries will only have to face the basic rate of 10%. Among them are:

  • United Kingdom
  • Singapore
  • Brazil
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • Türkiye
  • Colombia
  • Argentina
  • El Salvador
  • United Arab Emirates
  • Saudi Arabia

As an exception, goods loaded onto a vessel at the port of loading and in transit in the final mode of transit before 00:01 a.m. on April 5, 2025, US Eastern Time with respect to application of the basic tariff rate of 10%, which are introduced for consumption or removed from the warehouse for consumption after that time, will not be subject to this basic tariff.

Country-specific tariffs

The higher tariffs, applicable from 9 April, affect imports of products from certain countries. They are listed in Annex I of the published government order and are, among others:

  • EU: 20%
  • China: 125% (including Hong Kong and Macau) in addition to the 20% fentanyl-related tariff imposed in February
  • Japan: 24%
  • South Korea: 25%
  • India: 26%
  • Vietnam: 46%
  • Cambodia: 49%
  • Thailand: 36%
  • South Africa: 30%
  • Taiwan: 32%

As an exception, goods loaded onto a vessel at the port of loading and in transit in the final mode of transit before 00:01 a.m. on April 9, 2025, US Eastern Time with respect to application of the specific tariffs, which are introduced for consumption or removed from the warehouse for consumption after that time, will not be subject to these tariffs.

90-day pause on all specific tariffs, except for China

Just on April 9, President Trump authorized a 90-day pause in the application of these “reciprocal” tariffs to some 75 countries, except for China.

Products excluded from the application of the above measures

The goods listed in Annex II of the Executive Order of April 2 shall not be subject to the ad valorem duties established therein, without prejudice to the fact that they have been or may be subject to the imposition of other duties or trade policy measures.

The list includes, inter alia, minerals, chemical products, pharmaceuticals and wood products.

Other US protection measures

25% tariff on all cars imported into the United States

Tariffs of 25% have been announced on vehicles, although it will be done in a staggered manner on automotive components, since there are several American companies in the automotive sector that import a very significant amount of parts from other countries.

Tariff on aluminum cans

A 25% tariff is also planned on aluminum empty cans used to package beer, which will also affect imported beer cans.

This measure updates the 25% tariffs that the United States already imposed on March 12 on steel and aluminum imports and that, at that time, especially affected Canada, Brazil, Mexico, South Korea and Vietnam in the steel sector, and the United Arab Emirates, Russia, China and again Canada in the aluminum sector.
